Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing 2019
The 18th IFAC Symposium on Control, Optimization and Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing, MMM 2019 for short, is a conference hosted by the South African Council for Automation and Control (SACAC). MMM 2019 promotes the exchange of ideas and developments in control engineering in the MMM field.
The symposium will provide a forum for professionals, researchers, and experts in control, mining, mineral and metal processing to review state-of-the-art control, optimization, and automation technologies in the field. Both academic and industrial control engineering practitioners have the opportunity to present their work and exchange research ideas with colleagues from across the globe.
The event is co-sponsored by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), of which SACAC is the National Member Organisation for South Africa.
IFAC Young Author Award
The IPC of IFACMMM2019 is pleased to invite nominations for the IFAC Young Author Award. The award is designed to stimulate the involvement of young scientists and engineers in IFAC, as well as to recognize top-level contributions of the younger generation in our field and to support their careers. To be eligible an age criterion the author must be a maximum 30 years old at the time of the event.
The following conditions apply:
- No self-nominations are allowed. Nominations are typically made by supervisors or reviewers.
- An awards selection committee, appointed by the IPC chair, selects several finalists, on the basis of the nomination letters, the review reports, and the papers.
Finalists are informed before the event.
- The selection committee selects a winner out of the finalists, after having attended the presentation of the paper at the event.
The award will be presented after the final plenary of the symposium.

Prof. Chris Aldrich
Professor Chris Aldrich is Deputy Head of the Western Australian School of Mines (Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering), holds a Chair in Process Systems Engineering in the WA School of Mines and is also an Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University. He was previously the Founding Director of the Anglo American Platinum Centre for Process Monitoring at Stellenbosch University.
He holds a PhD and a higher doctoral degree from Stellenbosch University, is a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineering and serves on the editorial boards of Minerals Engineering, Water SA and Control Engineering Practice. He was among other a recipient of the President’s Award of the Foundation of Research and Development (FRD) in South Africa, as well as of the British Association (S2A3) Silver Medal (2000) for international recognition of his early career research in the development and application of artificial intelligence in the resource industries. His research interests include artificial intelligence, nonlinear systems analysis, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy.
Prof. Jan Cilliers
Jan Cilliers is Professor of Mineral Processing at Imperial College London. He first graduated from Wits and then completed his PhD at UCT. He moved to Manchester in 1995 and built his flotation research team, the first to focus on the froth phase specifically. After 10 years the whole team moved to The Royal School of Mines, where they work on modelling, design and control, primarily of flotation and hydrocyclones.
He was Director of the Rio Tinto Centre for Advanced Mineral Recovery from 2008 to 2016, Head of the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London from 2011 to 2016 and is a member of the International Mineral Processing Council.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Kathryn Hadler
Kathryn Hadler graduated from the University of Manchester with a MEng in Chemical Engineering, followed by a PhD entitled “Down the bank froth stability and flotation performance”, completed in 2006. Her research in froth stability continued at Imperial College London, first in a postdoctoral position, before becoming a lecturer in 2011. During this time, her research focused on industrial validation and implementation of froth stability measurements for flotation optimisation. This included numerous plant surveys worldwide.
After an 18 month period in industry working at a mineral processing consultancy, Grinding Solutions Ltd, she returned to academia in 2016, and now works part-time between academia and industry.
She was Co-Editor of the International Journal of Mineral Processing from 2014 to 2017.
Dr. Osvaldo A. Bascur
Osvaldo A. Bascur received his dual degrees in B.S. Chemical Engineering and B.S. Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Concepcion, Chile and a Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Utah, Salta Lake City. He was a Process Control Engineer working for Duval Corporation, Tucson, AZ (now Freeport McMoRan). He was transferred to Pennzoil Company in Houston, TX where we worked as a Staff Engineer working in the process-engineering department. He is currently a Principal Industry-Academia Innovations at OSIsoft, LLC in Houston, TX. He received the SME 2013 A. Gaudin Award. 25 years with OSIsoft. Blue print for integration of sensors data and operational management, asset and energy optimization. A Digital Plant Vision Template to transform sensor data into Operational insights for Overall Process Effectiveness and predictive analytics. His current work includes consulting for process industries, preparing academic lectures in process analysis and predictive analytics.
He has published more 75 technical papers, Manuscripts: A journey towards a digital transformation in the process industries, August 2016. SME Handbook Process Control and Operational Intelligence Chapter, SME 2019, Latin American Perspectives: Exploration, Mining, and Processing, SME 1998. Dr. Bascur is a member of the SME, AIST, AIChE and IFAC MMM.
Prof. Andreas Kugi
Andreas Kugi is head of the Automation and Control Institute (ACIN) and full professor for complex dynamical systems at TU Wien, Austria. His main research interests include the modeling, control and optimization of complex dynamical systems, the mechatronic system design, as well as robotics and advanced process control. He has been collaborating with more than 40 national and international companies. Andreas Kugi has published more than 250 scientific papers in SCI- and SCIE-journals and full peer-reviewed conferences. Moreover, he is inventor or co-inventor of 98 patents and he has supervised more than 35 successfully completed PhD dissertations. Since 2014, Andreas Kugi has been heading the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Model-Based Process Control in the Steel Industry and since 2017 he is also the Head of the Center for Vision, Automation & Control at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT). Apart from many other activities, Andreas Kugi was the Editor-in-Chief of the IFAC journal Control Engineering Practice from 2010-2017, he is the Chair of the IFAC TC 6.2. Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing, and Vice President of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association (OVE). He is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, member of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and he serves as a member of the Expert Commission of the German Excellence Initiative. His affiliations include: Automation and Control Institute (ACIN), Vienna University of Technology; Christian Doppler Laboratory for Model-Based Process Control in the Steel Industry; and Center for Vision, Automation & Control, Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT).
